Moving Client Network Utility

Hi Folks,
I'm having to move workstations and was wondering if anybody knew a quick way to move all the alias's from your client network utility from one workstation to another.
CheersSave the following key and restore it over the other workstations.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE=>SOFTWARE=>MICROSOFT=>MSSQLSERVER=>CLIENT=>CONNECTTO

Moving a SQL Server 2005 Database from the local network to an online server.

Hi All, first post.

I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.

Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)

It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.

The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.

This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.

Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.

So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?

Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.

One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Markhmmm I thought this would be something alot of people would have done before.|||It's not something done. You don't want to access any DB directly over the internet. Many bad things can happen.

You have several better options.

1) Setup a vpn. No exactly simple, in many cases, but should be doable. There's free utilities, and all traffic is encrypted.

2) Use a multi-tier driver solution that allows some level of access control and encryption.

You may have real difficulty in connecting. Due to some serious goofs in SQL Security, there were some vicious worms that targetted MSSQL, to the point where many networks block the well known ports.

Moving a DB from 1 Server 2 another

Hi all,
I have a databse on an SQL Server 2000 that I need to move to another
one.
If I can get a network connection between both servers, I can do this
easily
within Enterprise Manager, but what if I need to physically take the DB
to that server? Assuming that I can't get a network connection, how
would
I get the DB into the other server?
I backuped the DB and tried to restore it on a second test server that I
have,
but I could not get the Restore process to locate the backup file.
Thanks for your time and assistance.
SagaSaga,
Did the account have access to the directory containing the backup file?
Try Restore Database --> From Device --> Select Devices...--> Add... -->
Then click the elipses button and choose the backup filename.

I will have a look at the info that you mention. I got lucky... I was able to
register both SQL Servers in my Enterprise Manager, so the DB transfer
went along perfectly, but I am going to look into the info that you mention
because whenever I will need this I know I will need it bad :-)

Moving a big database

What is the best way to move a 15gb database. Copy the
files from 1 server to the other (the network connection
is pretty quick) or to backup then restore using a DAT
tape?Probably sp_detach_db and sp_attach_db.

I too agree Tibers comments. Because the backup of 15 GB database will take
20 Minutes and then Restore will take another 30 minutes. But if you go with
Tibers comment it will just take only copy time from source to destination.
Thanks

out SQL Lite Speed which will compress the backup as it's happening. This
will save a LOT of space, but more importantly will make the file copy a lot
faster since the file is a lot smaller...

Moved asp.net app to network share, cant access SQL

I've recently moved an asp.net website from my PC to a network share because another tech it going to be working on it. I finally got the correct permissions on the network share and the correct .NET Framework settings on my PC to be able to run the app. Now I can't access the SQL server which is on a different server. Getting the following error:

Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

How to I setup access to my SQL server for the app from any given PC on my LAN?

Your current error is not SQL Server permissions but CAS(code access security) you have to fix that before, you can get the error related to SQL Server permissions if any. The two links below covers the issues related to your error. Hope this helps.

Move Sql 7 databases to SQL 2000 server on different network

What would be the best/easiest procedure to move a few SQL 7 databases to a
SQL 2000 server that is running on a different network? It's easy enough to back them up, copy the backup files to
the SQL2000 server, and restore there.
If you have reliable network connectivity, you could skip
the copy step and restore directly from the backup files
on the remote server by specifying the files' UNC names.
You could also backup to the remote server, and then
restore from the backup files locally on the other server.

server and restore it there.

Make sure that both servers are using the same settings
for Locale, Collation and case sensitivity.

Just to expand a bit:
They don't *have* to be on the same collation setting as in SQL2K, you can have different collations
between different databases. However, that might cause problems if the code isn't written to handle
this, so I agree that this is a good idea.
