and user database from the old server then restore the data on the new
server. Any one had done this , will this work.
If we cannot afford down time then what is the best way to sync. the two
server.
If i am physicaly moving the old server to the new location do you think i
will have to break the cluster because the storage is on a san in the
current location.
My planning is in a very primitive stage now. Any input is apprieciated.

Moving a Windows 2003 Cluster to a New Forest
new AD forest. Both forests exist today. I have a 2 node Windows 2003
cluster with 3 resource groups -- the cluster resource group and two (2) SQL
2000 server resource groups.
My questions are...
1) Is this sort of migration possible/support?
2) If so, how do I go about doing it (or finding out how to do it).
Thanks.

Moving a SQL Server 2005 Cluster from one Domain to another
First, Can you move a SQL Server 2005 Cluster from one active directory domain to another? If so, what are the steps in moving a SQL Server 2005 Cluster from one domain to another?
Are there any concerns in attempting that move? I know that the domain groups are a hard dependency and that you cannot change them without doing a full reinstall. Does this have any bearing to moving a cluster between domains?
Thank you in advance for you assistance.

Moving a Full-Text Catalog from a single server to a Cluster
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction with a
problem I'm having moving a full-text catalog from one server to
another.
In a nutshell, I want to take a database with full-text indexing
enabled and move it and the catalog to a new server. The existing
system is a single server build but the new one will be clustered in
an active/passive configuration which complicates things a little.
Obviously I've read and tried the instructions in Q240867 but this
doesnt seem to have worked and a full population starts as soon as I
enable the funtionality again (so either I'm doing something wrong or
it's not possible to do it).
I've tried to follow the instructions on each of the nodes in the
cluster and on the virtual server but it doesnt seem to work.
Any help anyone can give me in this would be really appreciated.

Mike

|||Hi Hillary,
I've had a look and the DBID's are the same (I thought they were but
it's always worth double-checking), the only thing that should be
diffent is that the new build will be clustered (the old one isnt) and
the FTDATA directory is being moved from the c: to the shared d: (I've
updated the registry keys to reflect the new location)
What I'm really looking for is someone to tell me where I need to apply
the registry settings I took on the original system to (node 1, node 2,
virtual server, virtual SQL Server or some mix of everything), or
failing that if someone could say if and why it wasn't possible (I'm
fairly sure it is) that would be ok too.
There's probably something different (or extra) that needs doing on a
clustered installation that hasnt been documented yet.

|||Mike,
I researched and wrote the original KB article Q240867 (before it was
modified for SP3) and because you're moving from a non-clustered environment
to a clustered environment, this modified KB article's cluster related
procedures assumes that you are already in a clustered environment before
moving or copying the FT Catalog folder & files.
I'd recommend that you review KB article 812666 - "How to recover a failed
full-text search resource on a clustered instance of SQL Server 2000" at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=812666 if re-installation of
FTS is required. If not, I'd recommend that you consider setting up your
clustered environment first and then copy over the SQL000<dbid>000<ftcatid>
folder assuming the same dibd & ftcatid is on your clustered environment. If
this is not possible, then you most likely will have to run a Full
Population and take the hit on a long population period as I'm assuming that
is why you are copying to the new build from the old non-clustered build.

Moving a cluster out of a domain
workgroup. Is there any documentation available on this
procedure? So far an online search has come up empty.
You must have a domain (AD or NT4) for a cluster. The cluster needs a
common security context for all the services to work correctly. You cannot
run a cluster in a workgroup environment.

I believe they had a DNS server running on the cluster that

Move transaction logs in SQL cluster
I need to move the transaction logs for all the sql db's (including master,

There is no difference if you move t-log in a single box machine or in a
cluster environment.
You have to pay attention to move db files ONLY on shared disk and modify,
using EM, the switch -l in startup properties of SQL Server and assign them
the new location of t-log of master database

|||Hello Parky,
I agree with Luca. There is no difference between moving the db files on a standalone SQL server v/s clustered SQL Server. One difference is that the shared dirve where you want to move the db files should be in
the dependency list of SQL Server resource. (For Ex. Say you want to move the Tlogs to a shared drive F:. Make sure that SQL Server resource has F: as a dependency. If not you will have have make it. Note that
this requires a downtime as you will have to take SQL Server resource offline, add the shared drive as a dependency and then take SQL Server online. Then you can use your usual steps (see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224071/EN-US/
INF: Moving SQL Server Databases to a New Location using Detach/Attach )
If you have never done this on a cluster, I will recommend you to practice the steps on a test SQL Cluster or a cluster using virtual technology.

|||I would leave the System databases and there log file on one drive and split
the user databases to two diffrent databases, that way is you losse the log
drive you can still get sql server running and manage it to recreate the user
databases from the datafiles with diffrent location of the log files.

Move SQL Server cluster between SANs
I myself didnt find any document on that. But I can tell you that I
succefully did that 2 weeks ago on >> windows 2003 <<.
Assumptions:
1) The machines will not change
2) The storage will be changed
3) the 2 SANs will be accessible to the cluster for the migration purpose.
4) assume the Old disk drive is O: and the New disk Drive is N:
Steps I followed:
1) Backed the disks up
2) Backed the disk signatures/geometry. You can use "confdisk.exe" to do
that.
3) On the new SAN create a new partition that you will use for the SQL. Name
the disk N:\
4) Create a new Disk Resource for the new disk and have that in the SQL
group.
5) Offline the SQL resource (so that no one would be writing to the disk
anymore)
6) Keep the disk resources online.
7) using a copy utility replicate the data from the old drive to the new
drive, make sure to copy the correct ACL's/attributes/etc...
The " /o " switch with xcopy does copy the ACL's. You can also ntbackup then
restore the data. Whatever you are comfortable with to replicate the data.
8) Now Add the new disk as a dependency for the SQL resource. The SQL
resource at this point of time will have 2 disk dependencies: Disk O: and
Disk N:
9) Go to disk management. Rename the Old disk drive from O: to X:
10) Rename the New disk drive from N: to O:
11) back to cluster administrator, rename the resource from "Disk O:" to
"Disk X:"
12) rename the resource from "Disk N:" to "Disk O:"
13) remove the "Disk X:" dependency from the SQL resource. Now it should
only have one disk dependency "disk O:"
14) I would go to the advanced properties of the SQL resource, and set it to
"Do not restart".
(just in case things dont go well, you dont want the resource failing back
in forth between the nodes)
15) try to online the SQL resource
Does it work?
The go back to Advanced tab in properties and set it to "Restart"
Does it fail?
Go the event viewer and check the system and the application events. Does it
shed any light on the problem?
Thanks,

The only scare was to change the soft-zoning on the

|||Make sure you are using all the latest HBA drivers, EVA software, Secure Path software and switch firmware, else you'll run into stability problems with EVA5000s.

move log file to diff location
I got this error when I move the log file to a diff location in the cluster
environment.
Any ideas and solution?
Thanks
Msg 5184, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot use file 'T:\Logs\myrpdLog.ldf' for clustered server. Only
formatted files on which the cluster resource of the server has a dependency
can be used. Please don't multi-post. See my answer in .clustering.

Move from active/passive cluster to active/active
sorry for my lack of knowledge on this issue..
I've installed a Windows 2003 Cluster with SQL 2005. Works like a charm
when i do a failover.
Now i want to make this cluster active/active (multi instance) so no
connection is lost when a node goes down, but can't find any info on
how this need to be done. Can anyone help me out here..?!
Thanx in advance!
Hiddo,
"to make this cluster active/active (multi instance) so no connection is
lost when a node goes down"
When a cluster-group, or instance, moves from one node to another you do
loose your connection, as it offlines the group completely when moving.
Having a multi-instance, doesn't help, multi-instance is just another word
for having multiple virtual servers, they are still seperate in regards to
databases and connections. (e.g. if you have 2 instances, you can consider
them as being 2 different servers)
I do not think that your problem can be solved by server clustering.

_Edwin.

|||NLB is indeed different then failover clustering, however not really usable
with databases such as SQL.
You need to think of your requirements, and then match it to the right
technology option for SQL

Thanx for your support! It's become more clear to me now...
Nog 1 vraag ... : )

|||Hiddo,
Good practice is to keep posts in these newsgroups in english. This so
others can read the posts and possibly help themselves solving problems.
There are however some newsgroups for some topics in your native language,
they have the microsoft.public.nl.... prefix.
In regards to your question of fully removing a W2K3/SQL2K5 cluster,
first, remove SQL instances:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190438.aspx
then, remove the cluster:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282227
Good Luck !

Edwin.
